Tonight Congressman Sam Johnson (3rd Dist.-Texas) released the following statement after winning re-election to the Third Congressional of Texas. A 29-year Air Force veteran, Johnson spent nearly seven years as a Prisoner of War in Vietnam, more than half of that time in solitary confinement.

Sam chronicles his POW experience in solitary confinement in his autobiography, Captive Warriors. The book details the stories of the self-named “Alcatraz Gang,” including great American patriots, such as Jim Stockdale and Jeremiah Denton.

A decorated combat veteran and war hero, Sam earned two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, one Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts, four Air Medals, and three Outstanding Unit Awards.

Johnson sits on the prestigious House Ways and Means Committee where he serves as the Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee.

“Thank you. What a profound honor to earn your vote for another two years.

“One of the most inspiring parts about this election has been hearing countless people share that they are praying for our nation. That gives me so much hope for our future — especially for our children and grandchildren who only deserve our best.

“You know, some of the most patriotic people you’ll ever meet call North Texas home. The Third District remains a touchstone for faith, family and freedom. Thank you for putting your trust in me to serve as your common-sense conservative voice in Congress. Having your support means the world to me.”
